BILIRAN PROVINCE

1. What important events/new development happened in your province/city during the 4th quarter of 2002 which you believed had a significant effect on the economy of your province/city and/or region? Please describe briefly and indicate whether the effects were positive or negative.

  • The Provincial Government of Biliran thru Gov. Rogelio J. Espina and Congressman Gerardo S. Espina in cooperation with the Public Employment Office of Region 8 undertook a local passport processing which drew applicants from within Biliran, Leyte and Samar. The program boosts overseas employment opportunities.
  • The first Provincial Cooperative Summit on Electricity was held on December 13, 2002 with the Presidential Adviser on Cooperative and Administrator of Cooperative Development Authority, Hon. Roberto Pagdanganan, as Guest Speaker.
  • In the agriculture sector, Biliran Province recorded the highest yield per hectare in palay production among the six provinces in Eastern Visayas. The Agricultural Statistics Officer, Cesar Calleja made the assessment during the Regional Management Council Meeting at DA Regional Office VIII.

  • Establishment of the Biliran Museum and Public Library.

3. What major events are expected to take place soon within and outside your area, which you believed, will have significant impact on the economy? (Preferably, please indicate those that have been reported in the previous quarters)

  • The creation of the Biliran Historical Society steered towards enriching the island's culture and heritage.
